3 Web Hosting Tips for Newbies
With the decline in the global economy affecting the American families ability to keep a good job I expect more and more people to turn to the internet as a means of breaking the ties with traditional thinking. The rise in unemployment will create a desperate need for individuals to discover new ways to ‘bring home the bacon’. Most of those people will look outside of their comfort zone for ways to support their families which will lead many of them to look to the internet for money making opportunities.
This distresses me to a certain point because I know some of them will spend their last few dollars on information products or systems that they will not understand and therefore will not be successful. One thing I learned the hard way when starting out was to get very picky when choosing a webhost. You see I had absolutely no experience with websites or making money online and had very little money to use for start up capital. So of course I chose one of the cheapest hosting company’s I could find and man did I pay for it.
Anyone that wants to host their own website that has no experience at these things should take note here…Do not buy the cheapest host you can find. There are reasons for this and I am going to share just three of these reasons with you in this article. There are many pitfalls out there and if I can help a few people avoid them then I have accomplished my goals.
One thing that newbies do not know about is called bandwidth. Now I am not going to get all technical in explaining what it is because you will understand it better this way. Every time someone visits your website the web browser ‘loads’ the page into the browser viewing area. This uses bandwidth. Kind of like turning on a light, if it is off then you use no electricity. In this case the bandwidth is like electricity. Having videos and images causes you to use more bandwidth, like having stadium lights instead of a 100 watt lightbulb.
Why is bandwidth important? Because most hosting companies give you a monthly allowance of bandwidth then charge you extra if you go over. There are several factors that will use your bandwidth and cause you unexpected monthly bills. Things like, heavy traffic (visitors), tons of images, lots of videos. Hey I thought those were the same things that make websites popular and successful!!!My hosting provider has UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH.
Another very important factor when determining a good webhost is the control panel that you will be using to perform your administrative functions. My first host had a horrible control panel that I could barely log into because I had to use two separate login names and passwords…what is that about? Once I would get logged in I really did not know what I was looking at because nothing was labeled so I just stumbled around in the dark. They really sucked. LISTEN UP
BEGINNERS…Get yourself a webhost that uses “cPanel” as their control panel.
cPanel is awesome. Everything is labeled and organized in a way that allows you to at least understand what the basic functions are. Another great reason to demand cPanel hosting is the overwhelming amount of information you can find on Google about it. So if you get stuck, just Google it and in no time flat you are off to next project or problem. Trust me cPanel is great for newbies and veterans alike.
This last one is the icing on the cake. SUPPORT, SUPPORT, SUPPORT!!! Everybody needs it from time to time, but not everybody HAS it. I will tell you this…My webhost has big time awesome support. Of course they have a helpdesk and a forum, all good host’s do. One thing that sets them apart though is the live chat. Man that live chat button has saved my backside more than once over the last two years. These guys are simply good at what they do.
Now I am not saying they are the BEST, I am just saying that as long as they are in business I will be hosting all of my websites through them and they get a full 5 stars from me. So if you are thinking of starting your own website or just changing webhost’s I urge you to consider HostMonster as your host. I did and I have never looked back. Thanx HostMonster!!!
