Heading Tags For SEO

Heading tags are known as h1 to h6 tags. These tags are used inside the body tag on your “headlines” or headings. Using headings in your text helps to accentuate your message to your visitors and tells the search engine spiders that the text is important. When presenting your content to the search engines you will want to be sure to utilize these tags. This is an excellent place to use your top keywords and keyword phrases. I am not talking about keyword stuffing, remember that the text is for humans.

These html tags are set up to highlight your headings IN ORDER. An h1 tag carries more weight than an h2 tag. Make sure that you use them that way. Put your most important headline in the h1 tag and your least important in the h6 tag. Only use the heading tags ONCE per page or article. This means you should not use the h1 tag for all of your headings, after all they can’t all be the most important. The following tags are best used in conjunction with one another to establish text importance;

<h1>This tag is more important than</h1>

<h2>this tag,but this tag is more important than</h2>

<h3>this tag,and this tag is more important than</h3>

<h4>this tag.I think you get the picture. Remember</h4>

<h5>to only use each heading tag once per page or</h5>
<h6>article.Use keyword terms/phrases and call to actions.</h6>

<b></b> or <strong> This is best used for individual keywords and phrases in your text.</strong>

In some instances you may want to use the h1 tag for your articles title. If you have a self hosted WordPress blog then more than likely your h1 tag is being used on your blogs logo. This is the title text that shows up in the header. This means that every page shows your logo as the most important text on the page. With a little editing knowledge you can modify your theme so that your logo can use the h2 tag then reassign the h1 tag to your article titles. This tells the spiders that the title of your article is more important than your logo.

The search spiders will also take a closer look at text that is highlighted with bold, italics, and underline. While this text does not carry as much weight as an h6 tag, it is still considered more important than normal text. This is especially helpful for visitors as well since they can see your key points at a glance. Again this is a good time to utilize those keyword phrases.

Mix it up when you use your bold, italics, and underline. It is really easy to overdo it when using these tags so take it easy. If you use them too much your article will just plain look bad to your visitors. Use these tags correctly and they will help you direct the spiders to your most important textual messages as well as direct your visitor through your article.

Using these tags with your keyword terms and phrases will give you a highly optimized article. This will give your article a fighting chance at getting ranked in the search engine results pages. So when you write that next great article be sure to code it properly as well.

    Good tips, if you style heading tags with CSS, does that have any effect on how much the heading tags count with search engines?

    Good question. The answer is no. You can apply CSS styles to your headings without worry. Since styles are for the look of your site they have no bearing whatsoever on SEO and how the spiders view your site.

    Seo header tags is the major part in seo. It is recommeded to use atleast one h1 tag in the page. And if you use that heading tag for the targetted keyword. The page will get optimized quickly. This is an important factor in onpage seo.

    Wow. I hate to see wrong information show up at the top of Google a topical search. H1 should be used once, but to suggest that H2-H6 should only be used once per page / article is ridiculous. These are subheadings that can be used to head up page components – meaning they can be and should be used more than once. Pages should have only one headline, but can have many sub-heads.

    You are absolutely correct Izzy. At the time that I wrote this article I was still very new to SEO and all of it’s craziness. I guess I should go through my older articles and update them. Thank you for pointing this out, I do not want to mislead anyone.
