Title Tags-What they are and how to use them.

The title element, or tag, is one of the most important tags on your webpage. Basic search engine optimization starts with the title tag. The title tag tells everyone what the page is about, especially the search engines. By using very accurate descriptive text you can help your page rank better and provide an excellent title for your visitors.

Utilizing the title tag is one of the first things you need to be sure you are doing. Why is it so important? First and most importantly…It is required to be HTML or XHTML compliant. No, the html police will not show up at your door, but Google or Yahoo may not either! Second, because this is the text that will show up at the top of the browser when someone lands on your page. Third, this is also the text the search engines will display on the search engine results pages. This could very well be the first thing a potential customer would see so try to be very informative.

This isn’t the only place the title attribute plays a role on the internet. How about bookmarks and a browsers history. If the information stored in the title attribute is used in all these different places, then it is very important to the health of your webpage.

The TITLE tag can be found by viewing the html source of your page…it is always located before the <body> tag, between the <head></head> tags.
Here’s an example:

  • <HTML>
  • <HEAD>
  • <TITLE>Internet Marketing Techniques-Website Marketing Tips,Tools,and Ideas</TITLE>
  • </HEAD>
  • <BODY>
  • article content
  • </BODY>
  • </HTML>

Remember to use various keyword rich title text on each page of your site – this is *very* important. Only use keywords that appear on the page and avoid repeating the same word more than twice. If you feel the need to repeat a word, put one instance near the beginning and one towards the end.

The TITLE tag should be kept between 60 – 90 characters in length. I’ve read many conflicting reports on TITLE length, but a good practical guide is Google. In search results, Google currently displays only approximately 65 characters of the title – some engines display more. Keeping this in mind, have the most important keywords at the beginning of your title.

Don’t try to get too flashy with your titles. Keep it simple and to the point utilizing your main keywords. This will get you the best results in the long run. As in my example above my site is trying to get high rankings for the terms internet marketing techniques, website marketing, and any variation using the words tips, tools, and ideas.

Over time this will generate a steady flow of visitors from a variety of search results and they will all be targeted to my niche. Imagine your search engine friendly site with thousands of indexed pages all with keyword rich titles working for you day and night. The possibilities are endless.

Proper use of the title tag will make your site more search engine friendly and let visitors know at a glance what your page is about.

Thanx and remember…Always strive to improve and success will follow
