Internal Linking-Pushing Visitors and Google Juice
One aspect of SEO is so often overlooked by webmasters that it is mind boggling. This simple little internal linking tip can help you get better rankings for individual pages on your site. Almost allwebmasters have certain pages that they would love to have a high search engine ranking on. Pages like opt in pages, sales pages, and review pages. A high ranking sales page will certainly make you more money than that post you did on Social Networking. So just how do you help yourself get high ranking pages? Three words…Internal Linking Structure
Internal linking is actually very important to your site because it can help you direct visitors to deeper pages of targeted information. Guess what…the spiders will follow them too. Now I know you have a menu on your site for navigation but that is not what we are discussing here. This technique involves actually linking to 2 or 3 pages of related info within the text of your article or immediately following the article. Most bloggers accomplish this with the use of a Related Posts plug in.
This technique can help you with the search engine results pages in another way too. Have you ever seen those indented search results? Those are golden to getting clicks for some reason. A search with an indented result means you have two separate links, (a main search result then an indented seperate result underneath), and these types of results get about 40% more clicks than the other results on the page. That is reason enough to have a stable internal linking structure in place.
This is a very effective way to get visitors to the exact information they are looking for (if it is there to be found). You can use this method to pass pagerank around your site to the pages that matter most to your business. The following example will show you how to maximize this technique.
To pass pagerank and try for those indented results I recommend a 3 way linking system. Say you write an article on bicycles, and you want that page to rank high on your site and the search engines. Now you should write at least two related articles using similar keywords. Now using your keywords as anchor text, link your new articles to the page and each other. Now on the page add the links back to the articles as anchor text AT THE END OF YOUR ARTICLE.
- Main page links out to top 5 results you would like to be considered for an indented search result
- Article 1 links to main page (keyword anchor text) and article 2
- Article 2 links to main page and article 1
- Article 3 links to main page and article 4
- Article 4 links to main page and article 3
Continue that pattern as often as you like with 10, 20, or more articles and you are casting a heavy vote for that page with the search engine spiders. You are also creating a “funnel” to that page within your site pushing visitors in that direction.
To maximize a particular page just keep adding two related articles and use the linking structure explained above. Before long you can have dozens of keyword rich internal links pointing to your most important pages. This will help establish relevance for that page and give you the opportunity to gain some indented search results because of the amount of related links on your site.
You can pass pagerank around by allowing “dofollow” which is the same as doing nothing at all to your internal links. Pages with pagerank will pass some “juice” along to the links that DO NOT USE the “nofollow” attribute. To try to keep that pagerank juice on your targeted page I recommend using nofollow on ALL links on that page.
If you have written dozens of articles with internal links pointing to a particular page I suggest that you pick your top 5 for the links back to related articles. This will help your main page look O.K. to your visitors and target specific pages for indented search results. There is certainly no guarantee that you will ever gain those types of results but this will help your sites ability to be considered.
Thanx and remember…Always strive to improve and success will follow
