With the rise in popularity of blogs and blogging, people will want to know more about it. One reason for this is a blogs interactivity. Visitors can read the articles and leave comments thereby leaving their input to the article as well. Well written or controversial articles can have hundreds of comments where users have shared their feelings about the topic. This alone could be a large part of the growing popularity of blogs.

Blogs are also very user friendly from an administrative point of view. These types of websites are generally very easy to edit. One of the best known blogging platforms on the internet is WordPress. This is by far my favorite and many a marketer would agree. The overall abundance of free tools is astounding and growing by the day. I would recommend a self hosted WordPress website to anyone even slightly serious about having a site they can fully control.

Anyone can get a free blog at www.wordpress.com but they will have limited control over all of the sites features and functions. With a self hosted WordPress blog you will be able to choose from thousands of available themes, themes are designs in case you did not know. That’s just the beginning, you will find out quickly enough that the resources far outweigh the demand. Every time I want to do something new on my site I find multiple plugins to handle the job, and they are all free. How great is that.

Another great reason to have a self hosted site is also the most important…your content. If you post the wrong content on a free blog then you may have your account terminated. This can be devastating if you have alot of time invested in your site. The problem is that you may not get noticed until it matters the most to you. Say for instance you have a free blog talking about gambling and you have been posting for 3 months and getting some good traffic. Things are looking good, the site is coming along fine, you wake up one day and try to login to your site…

Where did your site go??? Oh the administrators decided that your content was too controversial and was bringing the wrong kind of traffic to THEIR site. So your kicked to the curb with no site and nothing to show for your efforts over the last three months. These things happen to good people all the time.

Another reason blogs are on the rise is the ease of use I was discussing before I ranted a little about the past.If you have spent any time posting on forums or discussion boards then you can write great posts for a WordPress blog. It comes standard with a built in wysiwyg editor that allows you to format and style your posts to fit your style. You can upload and add images right from the interface as well as audio and video.

WordPress also has ‘widgetized’ sidebars that allow you to drag and drop your sidebar information to the location you want it in. You will be able to place items like your categories, archives, admin, and recent posts to name a few, exactly where you want them in the sidebar. You have total control over your content and site design with the ability to grow and change as needed all with one platform…WordPress…and it is FREE!
