Linking for High Rankings
Pushing your site to the top of the search engines takes a variety of skills. Most of these skills are virtually automatic as long as you are doing things the right way. White hat seo will beat out all grey hat or black hat methods everytime IN THE LONG RUN. If you stick with the methods Google prefers then once you get your site to the top, you will stay there. One of the newest methods of pushing your site through the serps is 2 or 3 way linking. Do not be fooled into thinking this is acceptable by Google.
Search Engine Optimization can be summed up in one sentence. This is two sentences combined to make a single sentence taken directly from Googles Webmasters Guidelines…”Make pages primarily for users not for search engines and avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings”. Which brings me to the topic of this article…linking. As I have begun my search for quality link partners for my site I have basically hit a brick wall with most webmasters. You see I am truly building this site to help people learn how to have a successful site for years to come.
I assure you that Google wants you to link to sites that will help your visitors find the information they are looking for. This is building a site for the people that will use it, not the search engines. So what exactly is 2 way linking and 3 way linking?
2 way linking goes like this…I have 1 site and you have 2 sites. I will link to your main site then you will link to my site from your second site. This gives the appearance of a unique 1 way link to the search engine spiders.
3 way linking is similar but can have more participants. Basically site 1 links to site 2, site 2 links to site 3, then site 3 links to site 1. This is very similar to a webring. A webring is a group of sites all interlinked in a way that if you follow the links you will eventually arrive back at the site you started from. Again giving the appearance of a 1 way link.
Now I’ve been around long enough to see search engine ranking techniques come and go. I have seen the posts on forums from countless webmasters that suddenly lost their rankings or worse, were banned from Google for being caught breaking the Webmaster Guidelines. Personally I am in this for the long haul so I will not use tactics for the sole purpose of search engine rankings. High rankings do not happen overnight and Google is very good at spotting the latest tricks and then changing their algorithm to catch and penalize sites that use them.
I know the only way to survive these changes in Googles searchbot programming is to refuse to chase these fly by night ranking tricks. It sounds good and yes I do want high rankings, but I am more interested in staying at the top once I get there. It takes hard work and dedication to build a high ranking site even if your using ‘tricks’ to get there, so why put that hard work in jeopardy?
If you want my advice…WHITE HAT SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION WILL GET YOU THERE AND KEEP YOU THERE. Do a google search for internet marketing techniques and you will find me comfortably on page 2 above the fold and I am competing against over 70,000,000 pages. As far as the time it has taken me…I posted my first article on this domain in May 2008. Not bad for 10 months work…and I do this PART TIME. So as always the choice is yours and so is the responsibility of your websites search engine health.
Thanx and remember…Always strive to improve and success will follow
