Subject Lines
Fire, fire, fire!!!
Did that get your attention? I have had several visits this week by people looking for info regarding subject lines in email marketing. We all want our emails opened and read or we wouldn’t send them. After doing some digging around I have found some helpful information that I will pass on to you.
It seems that most of us are doing it all wrong. After reading 20 ebooks and 100’s of articles telling me to be creative and grab ‘em by the throat, I decided to test myself. Which emails grab my attention? Certainly not these…”100% Commissions”(like I need another link to promote),”Free Gift Inside”,”Last Chance”. The list goes on and on.
You can download my podcast for this article here. Just right click and select “save link as” or “save as” then save to desktop for the mp3 file. Left click to download this video article for your learning pleasure. Enjoy!!!
So if those are not working for me then what is…INFORMATION. That’s right boys and girls, after 2 or 3 emails from someone, I know if I plan on reading them or not. The ones I always open come from people that send out information packed emails. I know that making sales is the desired end result but you need to create the relationship first.
After I sign up to “Joe’s” email list, and get my first email, I will read it carefully. If it is a blatant sales letter with no tips or useful information then I will delete it and wait for #2. When it arrives I will open and read it in the same manner as the first. If it has no “value” then “Joe” is quickly telling me that “he” has no value. I may or may not open #3. If I do and it is more of the same I will instantly unsubscribe.

However, if Joe’s 2nd email is packed with quality info I will undoubtedly open the next few looking for more info. Also my purchase history shows that I buy from the people that provide me with good content. Content is KING!
When you are writing your emails take a few minutes to at least put a quick tip in there. It’s not hard to share some of your knowledge and when the right person see’s it you’ll possibly make a sale. The only exception I can think of is when someone sign’s up from a salespage. If they signed from your salespage looking for more info on that product then sell away.
So now that we have established that your email newsletter should be content driven, what do we do about those nagging subject lines. In my “opinion” a good marketer should take this time to BRAND themselves. What does that mean? Simply stated “branding” yourself means using your name or your company’s name. Such as, David Knops Newsletter Issue 1.
So you can go with big flashy headlines or simple and professional, either way if your emails don’t get opened, you don’t make any money from your list. The best subject lines will tell you what’s inside while the worst subject lines will sell you what’s inside. So “tell it don’t sell it”.
Thanx for your time and remember…Always strive to improve and success will follow
