Do Unique Article Titles and Descriptions Matter?

Providing quality content is the main purpose for most websites. The two main types of content found online are articles and videos. These two content mediums make up most of the internet users access to vital information. For the average marketer articles are considered to be very valuable online real estate as this is one of the easiest and fastest ways to success.

There are a few things to be considered when writing articles especially if you are interested in getting good search engine rankings for your articles. This article will discuss how your article title and description can affect search engine rankings and click through rates.

I will share two tips you can implement immediately to help your articles bring you more visitors and push your site to better search engine rankings over time. The first tip I will discuss is the article title and the second is the article meta description.

grarrowArticle Titles- Of course you have already heard that you should write a compelling title but it goes a little deeper than that. Most marketers like to stuff the title with keywords hoping that will help with rankings, and it might sometimes, but how many visitors are you getting from that tactic? You should be writing your titles with the end user in mind. This will encourage more click through rates which is exactly what you are looking for.

Here is the almighty tip most webmasters seem to miss when it comes to article titles. Write a completely unique title! This means to write a title that Google does NOT have in the archives. Simply visit Google and type your title in the search bar inside quotation marks (“”) and tweak it until you get this result… No results found for “My Unique Article Title”.

If you combine compelling and unique in your article title you will be getting the best of both worlds…good search engine rankings and click through rates from targeted visitors. A great title is completely unique, contains one or two keywords or a short keyword phrase, and a call to action (compels the searcher to click), and is less than 70 characters long. Google only shows 70 characters.

greenonArticle Descriptions- This is extremely important for click throughs to your website. People will read this description to see if it contains information that is relevant to the search they performed. Do not waste your time on keyword stuffing if you want to get visitors. It just does not work.

One of the most important things to remember is the description length. Google only shows 160 characters in their search results descriptions. This number includes spaces, punctuation, and letters so you need to be mindful of your description length. Some webmasters simply use a portion of the article for the description, I suggest writing a separate description as this helps keep your overall uniqueness.

Believe it or not the length of your article description DOES influence click through rates. Some top SEO researchers have found that articles that go over the recommended length of 160 characters get less click through rates because Google applies an ellipsis (…) to the end of the description. Now I do not know why this makes people skip over a particular description but I believe the researchers that say it does.

Of course these are just tips and you are free to make your own conclusions, however allow me to suggest that you at least do some further research before discarding these tips as useless. I utilize this same information when writing articles just like this one.

Thanx and remember…Always strive to improve and success will follow
