PageRank Half Truths Exposed
As most marketers have figured out, Google is the big bad wolf of the search engine world. Trying to stay on top of how Google works is like trying to ride an oil covered bull bareback. Now that is hard to do! One of the first things we need to do is start separating fact from fiction. In this case I will say that these are half truths that I will expose as whole truth.
I say half truths due to the guru factor. If enough guru’s say it then it becomes an accepted truth even if nobody tried to verify the facts. In this article I will look at two PageRank half truths or myths and expose the truth so that you may understand exactly what is and what is not helping you.
This first one is great because you will see all sorts of information out there that says that this is essential
for getting listed, high pagerank, and good search engine results. However I laugh at them all, hahahahahaha.
This is one of the first things you learn when you start to try to promote a website too. Got it yet? Here it is…Get your site listed in ODP (Open Directory) or Yahoo Directory and you will get higher search engine rankings. How about those directory submitters that are still being used by people that do not know better. Just stop the madness because you are probably doing more harm than good.
W-H-A-T-E-V-E-R, do not believe it even for a minute. This is pure nonsense. Maybe 10 years ago when there were only 2 websites online anyway, but not on today’s internet. Look the search engines are way more complex than that and Google could care less if your site is listed with either directory. Being listed will NOT give you any special PageRank or search engine rankings. Trust me here, you will gain nothing extra by being listed in those directories, maybe some traffic but that is about it.
The next myth or half truth is that PageRank is computed by the AMOUNT of links pointing to your site. This is definitely a half truth as the number of links does have a little to do with it. However the biggest factor in this extremely complicated mathematical equation is the quality of links you have. Having links from a trusted and well established site that is related to your niche is by far the most important factor Google looks at.
One of the most common tricks webmasters have been using the past two years or so is called 3 way linking. This is simply 3 sites all with a one way link to the next site. Google does not like this and people do it because they think it will give them better search engine rankings and in some cases it might. The problem is that you will need a bunch of sites scattered around to make it all work and Google is developing ways to detect this so it will be dead soon and so will the sites that are practicing this linking scheme.
The real truth is exactly what webmasters do NOT want to hear. Good search engine rankings and high PageRank, that stands the test of time, takes WORK AND TIME. I know, those are both four letter words you do not want to associate with your website but it is the truth and sometimes the truth hurts.
Thanx and remember…Always strive to improve and success will follow
